the chandos arms is looking for a new tenant

About the Chandos Arms

The Chandos Arms is a historic, community-owned village pub at the heart of Oakley, Buckinghamshire. Long valued as a place to meet, socialise, and bring the community together, the pub plays an important role in village life. We are now seeking a new tenant to take on the Chandos Arms and help shape its next chapter as a welcoming, well-run local pub.

the COMMUNITY OBJECTIVES

A Pub at the Heart of the Community

As a community-owned pub, we have community objectives to protect the pub as a shared village space and ensure it serves local needs.

the important parts…

The Chandos Arms exists as a family-friendly, community-focused village pub, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. Historically, pubs in Oakley were at the heart of village life, and the aim is for the Chandos Arms to continue that role as a place for everyday use — from weekday coffees to weekend meals and village celebrations.

As a community-owned pub, we are looking for a tenant who believes in the positive social impact a village pub can have, and who is committed to working with the community to create a welcoming, well-run, and sustainable business.

THE BASICS

The pub should be well maintained, inviting, and reliably open, recognising that commercial success and community benefit go hand in hand. While the tenant must be free to make sound business decisions, the pub should, where commercially viable, operate regular and clearly published opening hours that allow the community to gather, particularly at weekends, bank holidays, and during major village, cultural, or sporting events.

Open communication between the tenant and the community owners is important to ensure the pub remains successful, responsive, and well cared for.

OUR AIM

The shared aim of the community, OVPL, and Oakley Parish Council is a thriving, sustainable village pub that balances commercial success with community benefit. We recognise that compromise is sometimes necessary and believe that a strong, open relationship with the tenant will create a pub the village can be proud of for years to come.

EVENTS & COMMUNITY

The Chandos Arms is expected to play an active role in village life by hosting or supporting events such as:

  • Regular community events (e.g. quizzes, themed food nights)
  • Partnerships with village groups and teams
  • Major sporting events

FOOD, DRINK & SERVICE

The Chandos Arms should offer good-quality, well-priced village pub food and drink, rather than fine dining or a high-end gastro experience.

  • Freshly cooked food, including well-executed pub classics
  • Use of local suppliers where practical
  • Affordable and accessible menus, including options for children
  • Consideration for dietary requirements
  • A clean, well-maintained drinks system and competitive pricing

Service should be friendly, welcoming, and inclusive, with a preference for employing local people where possible.

FAMILY, DOGS & ATMOSPHERE

The pub should be family-oriented, accommodating well-behaved children, and dog-friendly, with a clear and sensible dog policy published and followed. The atmosphere should be comfortable, safe, and inclusive for all customers.

The interior, exterior, garden, and car park should be kept to a good standard, creating a pub the village can take pride in.
